Sierra Leone to commemorate the first anniversary of the declaration of the end of the Ebola outbrea

The first anniversary of the declaration of the end of the Ebola outbreak falls on Monday 7th November 2016. To honour those who lost their lives and to remember the nation’s united effort to end the outbreak, the Government and people of Sierra Leone will observe a three-minute silence from 11.00am to 11.03am on Monday 7th November 2016.

  • The general public is encouraged to observe the three-minute silence wherever they are;

  • Government institutions are to lower the national flags to half-mast;

  • All traffic is to halt for the duration of the three minutes of silence with the cooperation of the Sierra Leone Police;

  • All schools are to observe the silence;

  • All media houses are to observe the silence.

All Sierra Leoneans are encouraged to wear something yellow to reflect the Yellow Ribbon Campaign initiated during the Ebola response by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and the National Ebola Response Centre (NERC). Communities, institutions and organisations across the country are encouraged to organise their own commemorative ceremonies to coincide with the national three-minutes silence.

Immediately following the three-minute silence an address from His Excellency the President will be broadcast to the nation. All radio and TV media outlets are encouraged to participate in airing the address as a simulcast.
